Indonesia – 8 Thing’s You Probably Didn’t Know

It’s not one you hear about in the news too often, but Indonesia is actually a very interesting place.

Whether you’re originally from Indonesia, your family comes from Indonesia, or you’re just interested in learning more or even visiting, the facts below are some of the little-known things you should learn about the country.

Indonesia’s Size.

Indonesia is ridiculously large. Consider this, you can easily fly from one side of the United States to the other side in under 6 hours. People do it everyday for work, vacation, etc.

If you wanted to fly from one side of Indonesia to the other it would take you almost 13 hours. That’s more than half of a day!

Islands Galore.

Indonesia has over 17,500 islands!

If you’re prone to shipwrecks or if your name is Gilligan, Indonesia may not be the place for you.

Rain, Forest, Rain!

There are so many rainforests in Indonesia that they are ranked the world’s 2nd highest in terms of biodiversity.

With over 238,000,000 people living in Indonesia, ranks #4 in terms of Population. That’s a lot of mouths to feed!

Oh Lawd!

Religion is very important to Indonesians. In fact, every Indonesia citizen must choose 1 of their 6 recognized religions. It doens’t matter if you say your prayers or attend church on Sunday, but when it comes to government paperwork you’d pretend you’re an angel.

Oh, also, a man and a woman who have different religious views may not matter. No hybrid religious babies, someone needs to convert in order for the marriage to be completed.

Right Down The Middle.

Right down the middle of Indonesia you will find the equator. That’s right, the equator literally divides the country in half, kind of like that time you and your brother divided your shared bedroom with a piece of chalk and claimed half.

Java Man.

The oldest recorded ‘human’ remains, also known as ‘Java Man’ were discovered in Indonesia. These remains indicate that Indonesia was occupied anywhere from 500,000 to 2,000,000 years ago!

There are over 150 volcanoes throughout Indonesia.

Thankfully they no longer sacrifice virgins in these volcanoes and most are safe and make great tourist attractions.

So if you ever visit be sure to check out a volcano and snap some cool pictures.
